How to file a federal extension (Form 4868)

1) Login to your FileYourTaxes.com account

2) Select Work With Filing 

If you have not created a current year filing, select Start a New Return or Extension

3) On the Navigation Page, select Begin a Federal Extension 

The User Agreement must be signed before completing the prompted extension entries. 

4. Complete the Form 4868 Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Income Tax Return page

If you enter an Amount you're paying, you will be asked to choose your payment method (Paper Check or From Bank Account) before filing

What Amounts Do I Enter? 

Unfortunately, we cannot advise you in figuring the amounts to enter on our Form 4868 entry page as this is considered tax advice. Below are the IRS suggestions that may guide you in the right direction. For additional guidance, please review the IRS Form 4868 Instructions.

Total tax liability (Reflecting on Form 4868, line 4)

• The IRS instructs filers to enter the same amount you expect to report on your Form 1040, line 24 for your Total Tax 
• You can figure an estimate of this amount by beginning or editing your federal tax return from the Navigation Page and entering the income documents you have available to see the amount that will print on Form 1040 line 24
• Make your estimate as accurate as you can with the information you have, if you expect this amount to be zero, you must enter zero

Total payments (Reflecting on Form 4868, line 5)

• The IRS instructs filers to enter the same amount you expect to report on your Form 1040, line 33 (excluding Schedule 3, line 10) for your total payments
• Do not include the amount you’re paying with this federal extension
• You can figure an estimate of this amount by beginning or editing your federal tax return from the Navigation Page and entering the income documents and previous payment amounts you have available to see the amount that will print on Form 1040, line 33

Amount you're paying (Reflecting on Form 4868, line 7)

• This is how much you will pay at the time of filing your extension
• The IRS instructs filers to pay as much of the Balance Due amount (Form 4868, line 6) as possible to limit the amount of interest you will owe
• You may be charged a late payment penalty on the unpaid tax from the due date of your return
• You can choose to pay the amount you owe via Paper Check or From Bank Account later in the filing process
